| Hospitality is the fastest-growing industry in the United States and is facing a shortage of trained managers with lodging experience. With more than 76,000 job openings for lodging and food service managers every year, your students are sure to find a position where they can develop a meaningful and exciting career.
The Lodging Management Program provides you with everything needed to prepare your students to succeed in an industry that offers unlimited opportunity, including how to set up hospitality internships so they can apply what they learn.
What is the Lodging Management Program®?
Lodging Management Program (LMP) is an STC program developed by the AH&LA Educational Institute. LMP is designed to introduce juniors and seniors to careers in the hospitality industry. Through classroom activities, internships and comprehensive exams, students have the chance to earn national certification.
What is the S.T.A.R.T. Program?
Skills, Tasks, and Results (S.T.A.R.T.) Training is a one-year curriculum that introduces students to the world of hospitality as a career. This program provides specific skills training for entry-level positions for the rooms and food and beverage divisions of a lodging operation including front desk, reservations, housekeeping, guest services, restaurant service, banquet service, and many more. This is a great program for career re-training or as an introductory class for 9th and 10th grade students prior to going into the Lodging Management Program.
School-based Components
The LMP and S.T.A.R.T are typically integrated into existing family & consumer science or career and technology education courses. Professional developed course materials include textbooks, student workbook and exercises, videos, transparencies, and hands-on food preparation activities. The entire curriculum meets national skill standards and competencies specific to the hospitality industry and is approved and supported by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
Work-based Components
All LMP students are encouraged to complete a 400-hour paid, mentored internship and must complete it to earn the national certification. Students will typically work 10-20 hours per week in a variety of positions to develop a wide range of skills. A workplace mentor is assigned to meet with the student for approximately 30 minutes each week to provide on-going performance feedback, to review the LMP Competency Checklist and to connect classroom learning to actual job responsibilities.
National Certification
The Lodging Management Program Certificate is awarded by the Educational Institute of the OH&LA based on the student successfully completing both the academic and the work components of the program. The certificate shows the industry that a student is motivated and interested in success and leads to other professional certification opportunities. Certification is a major step that a student takes toward furthering his or her career.
